Wholesale Pricing Begins to Climb

While stability has once again returned to the steel industry, those surcharges that became common place during 2005 have become permanent price increases in the 4th quarter. Coupled with rising oil and gas pricing that affects all areas of manufacturing and distribution of products, this leads to the inevitable reality that an increase in the cost of manufactured goods is on the way.

Many material handling manufacturers have already begun the process of making the marketplace aware with the elimination of special pricing concessions earlier this year. Announcements in certain market segments during the 3rd and 4th quarters that they no longer can absorb raw material cost increases are now seeing these costs being passed onto the consumer.

All indications lead to higher prices during the year 2006. Many manufacturers have used 2005 as a time to implement manufacturing efficiencies. But they too confess that rising material costs have outpaced their ability to offset them in the processes. So, what does this mean to our customers? Get prepared to pay more just as you have prepared when you fill up your automobile.

One way to beat these costs is to purchase needed items and initiate projects early, before the end of 2005 prior to January 2006. In many cases, this will allow you to purchase materials at current pricing, even if the materials ship after the first of the year. But be careful, most manufacturers stipulate that material must be able to be received as soon as it completes the manufacturing process.

Another problem for Louisiana companies is trucking. Many trucking companies are adding surcharges to deliver goods in the Louisiana market because there are few back hauls out of the State at this time. This is causing many trucks to dead head empty for hundreds of miles before they can get another load. That cost is being passed onto the customer. We are monitoring this situation closely and see this problem getting better with each passing day.

The good news is that material handling products are still cost-effective investments. The last decade has seen minimal cost increases and, in some segments, even decreases. Improving your company's process through material handling innovation is still the best investment manufacturing and distribution companies can make.

Mezzanines Double Existing Space at Air Base

The 917th Air Force Reserve Unit at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana, was "land-locked" with no room for expansion. The 917th deploys both the B-52 Bomber and the A-10 Tank Killer and was among the very first to enter combat during both Operation Desert Storm and in Iraq. Due to increasing amounts of responsibility during wartime, along with an increase in personnel and equipment, the 917th once again needed more storage room for pre-packed combat ready "air-drop" pallets.

This long-time customer knew that the NECI experts would have a solution and wasted no time in getting help. Their previous success using Wildeck-designed mezzanines to increase storage space was the main factor in choosing NECI and Wildeck once again.

By utilizing Wildeck's unique engineering capabilities, NECI was able to design various mezzanines that were custom fitted to match the building configurations and storage requirements.

When completed and installed, the custom-fitted designs allowed the 917th to almost double its existing storage space.

Mezzanines Expand Hardware Store Showroom

Revell Hardware is a hardware distributor and owner of several Ace Hardware locations in the Jackson, Mississippi, area. At its location in Pearl, Mississippi, Revell wanted to expand the show room and point-of-sale area without affecting the back stock inventory.

Revell contacted numerous mezzanine distributors to bid on the project. NECI General Manager Ryan Harner says, "NECI won the project based on the quality of our turnkey proposal, along with our price. " Several mezzanines were selected, and things proceeded smoothly until Hurricane Katrina intervened.

The mezzanines were ready, but could not be delivered. NECI worked with its supplier, Wildeck, who stored them until Revell was ready to receive the material. When the delay was over, NECI was there to begin installation, which took place with no disruption to the store's day-to-day business.

A modification to the stairwell location was made in the field by NECI to accommodate a new entrance. This satisfied customer is now recommending NECI and the mezzanines to other Ace Hardware locations.

Wildeck Mezzanines

This Wildeck Beam and Bar Joist System measures 57,000 square feet. The mezzanine supports the conveyor system and provides a large order picking area.

Elevated offices free-up floor space and give a better vantage point for supervisors.
